Mount Dora, Florida is a historic lakeside city in central Lake County known for its small-town charm and year-round festivals. Sitting on a plateau about 184?feet above sea level, it overlooks Lake Dora and forms part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The population was roughly 16?341 in 2020. Downtown streets are lined with antique shops, cafés and inns, and the city embraces its nickname as a “Festival City” through art fairs, craft shows and holiday celebrations.

History and geography

Mount Dora evolved from an 1870s settlement called Royellou into a chartered town in 1910. Early leaders like John P. Donnelly donated land for parks and built the iconic Donnelly House, while the Lakeside Inn (opened 1883) welcomed winter guests. The arrival of the railroad in 1887 and road improvements in the 1920s spurred growth. Today the city covers about 9.2?square miles, including 1.2?square miles of water. Its humid subtropical climate brings hot summers and mild winters. Afternoon downpours and tropical storms can raise lake levels and send water into low-lying rooms. Homeowners turn to water damage restoration professionals to extract water, dry walls and prevent mold. Installing sump pumps and maintaining drainage systems reduces risk.

Parks and culture

Gilbert Park offers pavilions, barbecue grills and an expanded “Wood Wonderland” playground. Annie Donnelly Park hosts the annual tree-lighting ceremony and provides a fountain, shuffleboard and pickleball courts. Grantham Point, sometimes called “Lighthouse Park,” features a 35-foot lighthouse guiding boaters on Lake Dora. These parks, along with nature preserves managed by the Lake County Water Authority, are popular spots for picnics and festivals. Because they border the lake, they occasionally require water damage restoration to recover from flooding or fire damage restoration after lightning strikes.

Mount Dora’s downtown historic district boasts hundreds of structures from the late 19th century. The Mount Dora History Museum showcases the town’s early firehouse and jail, while the Modernism Museum and Mount Dora Center for the Arts offer exhibits and classes. Antique shops, bed-and-breakfasts and cafés draw tourists who come for art festivals, plant fairs and classic car shows. Many buildings have wooden frames and aging wiring, increasing fire risk. When blazes occur, fire damage restoration crews remove charred debris, clean soot and rebuild damaged sections to modern codes.

Community and resilience

Residents of Mount Dora take pride in their city’s lively arts scene and friendly vibe. Neighborhood associations host porch parties and cleanup days. The city distributes hurricane guides and organizes fire-safety workshops. By investing in preventive maintenance—cleaning gutters, trimming vegetation, updating electrical systems—and partnering with local water damage restoration and fire damage restoration teams, homeowners and businesses protect historic properties. This blend of preservation and preparedness ensures that Mount Dora remains a picturesque retreat and cultural hub along Lake Dora.

Nick was the crew chief that came out and did the demo on my home. He was compassionate and understanding through the entire process. Hunter did the demo with Nick. Hunter and Nick were very easy to discuss things with. They worked very neatly and cleaned up every night. Nick and Hunter made the demo process a little easier on me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, SERVPRO of Lake County and Mike Aprey. We are so glad we went out to get a second opinion. The first estimate we received from Pure Maintenance was for between $15,000 and $20,000 to remedy our problem (which is under 100 sq ft of mold). Thank goodness our insurance company suggested we check in with SERVPRO! Mike came by and meticulously explained everything to us in great detail. He took his time and reassured us that the problem was nowhere near that huge and something that we could easily do ourselves for a cost of under $2500. If you are looking for a company with integrity, SERVPRO of Lake County is who you need!
