After the Trees Come Down: Responding to Storm Damage in Tall Timbers

Tall trees offer shade and character, but severe weather can turn branches and weakened trunks into serious property hazards. One falling limb may puncture a roof, tear away gutters, break a window, or damage electrical service. Rain can then enter through the new opening and spread far beyond the point of impact.

For property owners in Tall Timbers, storm recovery often involves several connected problems. You may need to secure the exterior, remove water, inspect structural materials, and address electrical or fire hazards before permanent repairs can begin.

Keep Your Distance From Immediate Hazards

A fallen branch may bring electrical lines down with it. Treat every wire as energized, even when the power appears to be off. Stay inside or move to a safe location away from the affected area. Never touch a tree, fence, vehicle, or pool of water that may be in contact with a utility line.

You should also avoid entering rooms beneath damaged roofing or sagging ceilings. Wet drywall, insulation, and building materials can fall without warning.

Contact emergency services or the utility provider when you notice:

• Downed or damaged electrical lines
• Sparks, smoke, or a burning odor
• A tree resting against the building
• Major roof movement or collapse
• Broken gas lines or a gas odor
• Water near electrical panels or outlets
• Unstable walls, ceilings, or flooring

Do not climb onto a wet roof or attempt to remove large limbs yourself. Storm-damaged trees may shift unexpectedly as weight and tension change.

Rain Can Travel Far From the Roof Opening

A branch may create a hole in one section of the roof, yet the first ceiling stain can appear in another room. Water follows roof decking, rafters, wiring, insulation, and changes in elevation before it becomes visible.

Tall Timbers Marina, located along the Lower Potomac River, reflects the community’s close connection to open water and changing coastal conditions. Wind-driven rain can strike buildings from unusual angles and enter gaps that remain dry during an ordinary shower.

Once moisture enters, insulation may hold it against wood framing. Drywall can absorb water across a broad area. Hardwood, laminate, and subflooring may swell even when the surface only feels slightly damp.

Professional water damage restoration begins by tracing the moisture rather than focusing only on the obvious stain. Technicians may inspect attics, ceilings, walls, flooring, and adjoining rooms to determine the complete affected area.

Emergency Covering Is Only the First Step

A temporary roof covering can reduce additional rain entry until permanent repairs are possible. It does not remove water already inside the building.

Buckets and towels may control an active drip, but they cannot dry insulation, wall cavities, or layered flooring. Household fans may also distribute contaminated dust or prove ineffective in humid conditions.

Water damage restoration may include extraction, removal of unsafe materials, controlled airflow, and dehumidification. Moisture readings help determine whether structural components are drying as expected.

Southern Maryland’s humid air can slow evaporation after a storm. Opening windows may introduce additional moisture rather than improving the conditions indoors. A controlled drying environment provides a more reliable path toward repair.

Storm Damage May Create Fire Hazards

Wind and falling trees can damage electrical service, outdoor equipment, wiring, and appliances. Power may fluctuate as utility crews restore service, increasing the risk of surges or equipment failure.

Unplug sensitive electronics when it is safe to do so. Avoid resetting breakers that repeatedly trip. Buzzing outlets, warm wall plates, flickering lights, and burning odors require evaluation by a qualified electrician.

Portable generators introduce additional hazards. Operate them outdoors and well away from doors, windows, vents, garages, and enclosed porches. Never connect a generator directly to household wiring without an approved transfer system installed by a professional.

A damaged wire or overheated appliance can start a fire after the storm appears to have passed. Continue watching the property for unusual odors, smoke, and electrical changes.

Smoke Can Reach Areas Without Flame Damage

An electrical or equipment fire may remain confined to one part of the structure, but smoke can spread through attic spaces, vents, open doors, and utility penetrations.

Soot may settle on ceilings, furniture, electronics, clothing, and stored belongings. Different burned materials create different residues. Wiring and plastics may produce oily deposits, while wood and paper often leave lighter particles.

Fire damage restoration uses cleaning methods selected for the residue and the affected surface. Ordinary household products may smear soot, set stains, or damage finishes.

Professional fire damage restoration may include debris removal, surface cleaning, odor treatment, content evaluation, and coordination of structural repairs. Water used to extinguish the flames may also create an additional drying need.

Document the Scene Before Cleanup Advances

Take photographs from a safe location. Capture the fallen tree or limb, roof opening, broken windows, water stains, damaged contents, and affected exterior areas.

Record the time the storm occurred and when you first noticed the damage. Keep receipts for temporary coverings, emergency lodging, security measures, tree removal, and other reasonable expenses.

Avoid discarding major building materials or valuable belongings before they are documented unless they present an immediate safety hazard. Save damaged electrical components or broken plumbing parts when professionals confirm they can be handled safely.

Your insurance carrier may request information about the cause, affected areas, and emergency steps taken to prevent further damage. Clear records can make those conversations easier.

Reduce the Risk Before the Next Storm

Inspect trees for dead limbs, visible decay, split trunks, or roots lifting from the soil. A qualified tree professional can assess concerns that are difficult to evaluate from the ground.

Keep gutters and downspouts clear. Check roof flashing, shingles, vents, exterior seals, and drainage paths. Trim branches away from roofs and utility lines using appropriate professional help.

Later in the season, inspect exposed plumbing and heating equipment. Storm damage may weaken exterior materials that become more vulnerable as temperatures fall.

SERVPRO helps homes and businesses in Tall Timbers recover after wind, rain, fallen trees, electrical fires, and smoke damage. Coordinated water damage restoration and fire damage restoration can address immediate conditions, concealed damage, cleaning needs, and the preparation required for permanent repairs.

A fallen branch may create damage in seconds, but the effects can continue spreading long afterward. Secure the area, avoid electrical hazards, control further exposure when it is safe, and make sure the entire structure is evaluated before repairs cover the evidence.

What our
Tall Timbers customers are saying

Tim did a great job cleaning our carpets both upstairs and down. He was on time and he and his crew were courteous and efficient. We have used them numerous times and we’re very satisfied.

Dan McNamara

Our experience with SERVPRO of St. Mary’s & Calvert Counties included excellent personnel and workmanship, along with some frustrating coordination, estimating, and quality-control issues. The finished basement looks fantastic, and despite the issues below, we would use them again. Frank handled the initial cleanup and damage assessment. He was prompt, friendly, communicative, and gave helpful recommendations without pressuring us to use SERVPRO for reconstruction. Dylan, our estimator, and Kanyn, our project supervisor, were both personable and knowledgeable. Kanyn was especially responsive throughout the project. Casey was kind and professional, and Robby maintained communication during the contents portion. The flooring installation by Edgar and his crew was spectacular. We upgraded from carpet to LVP throughout the finished basement, including the bedrooms, bathroom, and stairs. The flooring completely transformed the space and their work deserves recognition. The project did have several coordination issues. Some delays were understandable, such as insurance approvals and personnel availability, while others appeared avoidable. There were delays in estimate submissions, an initial submission missing an attachment, difficulty obtaining updated estimates, and occasional communication breakdowns between departments. The flooring and coordinating stair components also were not thoroughly vetted before estimating. We ultimately researched and located a compatible stair nose ourselves, and I identified a significant quantity error in the estimate that could have materially increased the final bill. It was corrected, but it raised concerns about attention to detail. The pack-out crew was courteous and treated our belongings respectfully, but the process seemed disorganized at times. The pack-back experience was much better: two gentlemen returned our belongings efficiently, carefully staged everything where requested, and completed the unloading quickly. Two items were damaged during contents handling; the damage was documented and I am still awaiting the outcome. Although the main flooring installation was excellent, some finishing details initially fell short. Several sections of shoe molding had misaligned miters, exposed or unfinished cuts, and visible gaps beneath the trim or around door jambs. Minor debris and paint splatter were also left behind. Kanyn did offer a final walkthrough, which I declined because of scheduling and told him I would reach out if I found anything. After I documented the issues, SERVPRO chose to stand behind its warranty rather than provide a workmanship credit. Kanyn and Casey personally returned, inspected the concerns, and the corrections were completed to our satisfaction. The final billing process also required close review. I found charges for work that had not been performed, including bathroom flooring removal, vanity toe-kick removal/reset, and door/window trim painting. I also questioned the post-construction cleaning charge because I still had to sweep, mop, and remove paint splatter myself. SERVPRO revised the estimate, removed the applicable charges, and reduced the cleaning allowance. Overall, every employee I dealt with was polite and personable, and the primary flooring installation exceeded my expectations. The biggest areas for improvement are coordination, communication between departments, estimating accuracy, material verification, and final quality control. The process required more homeowner involvement than expected, but SERVPRO ultimately stood behind its work and addressed the concerns we raised. Our basement looks fantastic, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to the final result.

My experience was fantastic, and I contribute that to Scott's hard work and insight. I had a water heater fail and dump water all over my first floor requiring the removal of linoleum and carpet. He was fantastic to work with. Thank you!

I’d barely gotten off the phone with our insurance adjuster when ServPro called to schedule an appointment. I assumed they would come the next day but no - they were there that afternoon and worked until 9:00 pm! When we first encountered the water damage we felt overwhelmed but ServPro’s crew quickly gave us confidence that they knew what they were doing. In three days, all trace of the initial water intrusion had been eliminated and we were able to begin the repair phase of the project.
