When Water, Fire, and Storm Damage Happens in Hollywood, We're Ready.

Whether you're looking for restoration, cleaning or construction services in Hollywood, we're here to help 24/7.

Protecting Indoor Air After Water, Smoke, or Fire Damage

The air inside your property may change before the full extent of the damage becomes visible. Damp building materials can release musty odors, while smoke particles may settle inside fabrics, wall cavities, and ventilation components. These contaminants do not always remain in the room where the loss began.

For homeowners and businesses in Hollywood, protecting indoor air quality should be part of the restoration plan. Removing standing water or burned debris is important, but recovery also requires attention to hidden moisture, airborne particles, soot, and lingering odors.

Moisture Can Affect More Than Surfaces

A roof leak, plumbing failure, or storm-related opening may allow water to enter insulation, drywall, flooring, or wood framing. These materials can stay damp even after the visible water disappears.

Warm, humid conditions make the problem more difficult. Moist air slows evaporation and can leave enclosed spaces damp for longer periods. Over time, trapped moisture may contribute to material deterioration, musty odors, and microbial growth.

Professional water damage restoration begins with finding the complete affected area. Moisture-detection tools help technicians inspect walls, ceilings, floors, and other materials that may look dry from the outside.

Water damage restoration may include extraction, controlled airflow, dehumidification, and selective removal of materials that cannot be dried safely. The goal is to stabilize the environment rather than simply improve its appearance.

Smoke Residue Can Travel Throughout a Building

Fire damage often extends far beyond the burned area. Heated air carries smoke upward and outward through doors, vents, utility openings, and gaps around building materials. Air-conditioning and heating systems may spread particles into additional rooms.

Historic Sotterley, with centuries-old buildings and construction materials near the Patuxent River, offers a familiar local example of how varied and layered building assemblies can be. Modern homes differ from historic structures, but both can contain concealed spaces where moisture or smoke residue collects.

After a fire, you may notice:

• A smoky odor in rooms untouched by flames
• Dark residue around vents or doorframes
• Oily films on counters and cabinets
• Irritation that improves after leaving the building
• Discoloration on walls, ceilings, or metal surfaces
• Odors returning when the heating or cooling system runs

These signs suggest that surface cleaning alone may not address the full problem.

Why Ordinary Cleaning Methods May Fall Short

Soot is not one uniform substance. A cooking fire may create a sticky protein or grease residue. Burning paper and wood can produce lighter, drier particles. Plastics and synthetic materials may leave oily deposits and persistent odors.

Using water or an ordinary household cleaner on the wrong residue can smear soot, set stains, or push contaminants deeper into porous surfaces. Fire damage restoration uses cleaning methods chosen for the type of residue and the material beneath it.

Professional fire damage restoration may also include removing unstable debris, cleaning contents, treating odors, and evaluating ventilation components. Damaged insulation, drywall, carpeting, or other porous materials may require removal when they cannot be cleaned effectively.

Pay Attention to the HVAC System

Your heating and cooling system moves air throughout the property. That makes it an important part of the assessment after significant water, smoke, or fire damage.

Do not run the system when smoke residue is present unless a qualified professional confirms that it is safe. Operating it too soon may distribute particles into unaffected rooms.

Moisture near ducts, air handlers, or insulation also deserves attention. Condensation and damp debris can contribute to odors or microbial growth. An inspection can determine whether components need cleaning, drying, or replacement.

Take Safe Steps Before Help Arrives

Leave rooms with heavy soot, unstable ceilings, exposed wiring, or contaminated standing water. Keep children and pets away from affected areas. Avoid disturbing visible mold or carrying soot-covered belongings through clean rooms.

You can document the damage with photographs when conditions are safe. Record unusual odors, affected rooms, and changes that occur when the ventilation system runs. These details may help restoration professionals understand how contaminants moved through the property.

SERVPRO helps property owners in Hollywood address water, fire, smoke, and odor concerns. Water damage restoration and fire damage restoration should account for both the materials you can see and the conditions affecting the air around them.

A property can look clean while moisture or residue remains hidden. A thorough assessment helps you protect indoor air, prevent contaminants from spreading, and create a safer path toward complete recovery.

What our
Hollywood customers are saying

Tim did a great job cleaning our carpets both upstairs and down. He was on time and he and his crew were courteous and efficient. We have used them numerous times and we’re very satisfied.

Dan McNamara

Our experience with SERVPRO of St. Mary’s & Calvert Counties included excellent personnel and workmanship, along with some frustrating coordination, estimating, and quality-control issues. The finished basement looks fantastic, and despite the issues below, we would use them again. Frank handled the initial cleanup and damage assessment. He was prompt, friendly, communicative, and gave helpful recommendations without pressuring us to use SERVPRO for reconstruction. Dylan, our estimator, and Kanyn, our project supervisor, were both personable and knowledgeable. Kanyn was especially responsive throughout the project. Casey was kind and professional, and Robby maintained communication during the contents portion. The flooring installation by Edgar and his crew was spectacular. We upgraded from carpet to LVP throughout the finished basement, including the bedrooms, bathroom, and stairs. The flooring completely transformed the space and their work deserves recognition. The project did have several coordination issues. Some delays were understandable, such as insurance approvals and personnel availability, while others appeared avoidable. There were delays in estimate submissions, an initial submission missing an attachment, difficulty obtaining updated estimates, and occasional communication breakdowns between departments. The flooring and coordinating stair components also were not thoroughly vetted before estimating. We ultimately researched and located a compatible stair nose ourselves, and I identified a significant quantity error in the estimate that could have materially increased the final bill. It was corrected, but it raised concerns about attention to detail. The pack-out crew was courteous and treated our belongings respectfully, but the process seemed disorganized at times. The pack-back experience was much better: two gentlemen returned our belongings efficiently, carefully staged everything where requested, and completed the unloading quickly. Two items were damaged during contents handling; the damage was documented and I am still awaiting the outcome. Although the main flooring installation was excellent, some finishing details initially fell short. Several sections of shoe molding had misaligned miters, exposed or unfinished cuts, and visible gaps beneath the trim or around door jambs. Minor debris and paint splatter were also left behind. Kanyn did offer a final walkthrough, which I declined because of scheduling and told him I would reach out if I found anything. After I documented the issues, SERVPRO chose to stand behind its warranty rather than provide a workmanship credit. Kanyn and Casey personally returned, inspected the concerns, and the corrections were completed to our satisfaction. The final billing process also required close review. I found charges for work that had not been performed, including bathroom flooring removal, vanity toe-kick removal/reset, and door/window trim painting. I also questioned the post-construction cleaning charge because I still had to sweep, mop, and remove paint splatter myself. SERVPRO revised the estimate, removed the applicable charges, and reduced the cleaning allowance. Overall, every employee I dealt with was polite and personable, and the primary flooring installation exceeded my expectations. The biggest areas for improvement are coordination, communication between departments, estimating accuracy, material verification, and final quality control. The process required more homeowner involvement than expected, but SERVPRO ultimately stood behind its work and addressed the concerns we raised. Our basement looks fantastic, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to the final result.

I want to shout out Frank Turner and his staff for coming out so quickly to take care of our needs! I appreciate it more than you realize. Even though I’ll be displaced for a few months, I do appreciate you coming out within hours of me calling you

My experience was fantastic, and I contribute that to Scott's hard work and insight. I had a water heater fail and dump water all over my first floor requiring the removal of linoleum and carpet. He was fantastic to work with. Thank you!

Russ N

Frank and Brad did a great job removing molded drywall in the kitchen. They cleaned up and left no mess. Thanks!

Matt Dement

I’d barely gotten off the phone with our insurance adjuster when ServPro called to schedule an appointment. I assumed they would come the next day but no - they were there that afternoon and worked until 9:00 pm! When we first encountered the water damage we felt overwhelmed but ServPro’s crew quickly gave us confidence that they knew what they were doing. In three days, all trace of the initial water intrusion had been eliminated and we were able to begin the repair phase of the project.

Tim and Alan were fantastic! Finished on time with no hidden fees! My carpet has only looked better when it was brand new. I would definitely recommend the Servpro team to others!

Tony Rust
