Lafreniere Park is a small suburb of the Metairie area and is built around the largest park in the city. The plans to build the park were started in February 1973 and finished almost 10 years later in November 1982. The land was originally given to Nicolas Chauvin de la Frenière in the mid-1700s by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne and Sieur de Bienville. The land was passed around between a few different owners but eventually became the Jefferson Downs Racetrack in September of 1954. The future of the racetrack was short-lived due to Hurricane Betsy and was destroyed by water and fire damage on September 9th, 1965. Betsy was one of the most devastating hurricanes that the area had witnessed in over 50 years.
The Lafreniere Park area quickly became a popular attraction for many local families. The areas surrounding the park became more desirable due to their close proximity to this beautiful space that was filled with an extensive array of local wildlife and marshlands. This caused an influx of homes to be built in the area, followed by schools, churches, and businesses. With quick access to Veterans Boulevard, locals can be out of the park and into a shopping district within minutes.
Despite being over 2 miles away from Lake Pontchartrain, Lafreniere Park has to deal with the winds that can pick up over this large body of water. Thankfully due to the yearly rainfall and humidity, fire damage is something that isn’t as common as fire damage.
