Williamsville is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was originally named Benton in 1853, but was renamed after Col. John Williams, a Springfield businessman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Williams was a pallbearer at Lincoln's funeral and an early resident of central Illinois.
The railroad depot was built in 1854 and was a key factor in the village's growth and development. The Route 66 Wayside Exhibit and an interpretive sign at the depot highlight the railroad's significance to local history. In the early 1990s, two Union Pacific rail cars were converted into a structure that serves as a cultural resource. The Williamsville Historical Museum is located next to the Williamsville Public Library, which is housed in the depot building. The museum is made from two railroad boxcars and displays many historical artifacts from the town.
