Fox Lake is such a great place to live that we are in two (2!) counties: Lake County and McHenry County! French explorers enjoyed the area so much that they turned a formerly wild area into a residential one. We were "Nippersink Point" by the late 19th Century; “Fox Lake” is a much prettier sounding name.
Even in the early 20th Century, we had only a few hundred residents. In the summers, however, the population would swell to about 20,000 people! Most of them were from cities, and they needed to escape the oppressive heat. At the peak of this resort area, the area had 50 hotels and 20,000 cottages. There’s a persistent rumor that Al Capone sheltered in what is now the Mineola Hotel and Restaurant, but no proof.
Even in the 21st Century, many Chicago residents have summer homes here in Fox Lake. Since we are part of the Chain O’Lakes, many also have boats.
