Silver City, Iowa, located in Mills County, is a small community with a population of 245 according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1879 with the arrival of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railway, the town began as a busy stop along the rail line. Today, that former rail corridor has been transformed into a scenic bike trail, and Silver City features a park, gazebo, and café that serve as community gathering spaces.
During its early decades, Silver City was a bustling town with a lumber yard, grocery store, horse racing track, pharmacy, jewelry store, and several other businesses. A traveling carnival even visited annually, bringing additional life to the community.
Silver City has also endured its share of challenges, including three major fires that deeply impacted the town’s history. The first fire occurred when there were only two buildings on Main Street. Another destructive fire struck in 1891, wiping out the entire side of Main Street, and a third fire in 1894 damaged West Main Street. Each time, property owners rebuilt, strengthening the town with the brick structures that still line Main Street today.
