Located at the crossroads of County Roads 234 and 1474 in Alachua County, Florida is the beautiful town of Windsor, Florida. Full of forgotten stories and names but one that is still full of life. Timucuans and Seminoles lived in the area long before settlers arrived. Nearby Lake Pithlachocco, “Place of Long Boats,” is the final resting place of over 100 prehistoric canoes. They were discovered in 2000 when the lake’s water level had dropped during a dry season. In order to preserve them, the canoes were left buried in the lake bed. During the War of 1812 Colonel Daniel Newnans and Georgia militia lead a raid in the area in an attempt to annex Florida. They clashed with Seminoles, including King Payne, and several on both sides were killed. King Payne received a mortal wound and died days later. Colonel Newnan and the militia built earthworks and sent for reinforcements. Many of the soldiers became sick, though, and after seven days they headed back north. In 1844 John Bush began proceedings to acquire a 4,000 acre tract from the Arredondo Grant. Two years later the area was named Windsor by English cotton planters. Some of the earliest settlers were John Phifer and E. L. King, both slaveowners. Soon citrus culture would bring new settlers and change Windsor’s future. An important building still standing in Windsor is the Providence United Methodist Church. It was established by Reverend Edward Lawrence King, one of the town’s earliest settlers, in 1855 in a log church near the present site.
