The City of Stuart was chartered as a city and county seat in 1925, is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World, because of the many sailfish found in the ocean off Martin County. Stuart is located along Florida’s Treasure Coast, north of Palm Beach and just south of Port St. Lucie, FL. According to historian, Sandra Henderson Thurlow, who wrote Stuart on the St. Lucie: A Pictorial History, the city was named after Homer Hine Stuart, Jr., a local landowner, who came to Stuart from New York in 1883 and settled near the St. Lucie River, built a bungalow on the north side of the river and started growing pineapples. Stuart’s history is rich with many presidents who loved to fish in Stuart, such as Grover Cleveland, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding.

Grover Cleveland is rumored to have found Stuart by mistake, and some historians say the 22^nd president put Stuart on the map. According to A Treasure We Call Home by Rick Crary, Cleveland’s railway car was mistakenly decoupled and left stranded in Stuart. It is thought he was on his way to Palm Beach.  Lucky for Cleveland and Stuart, because he loved fishing in Stuart so much he returned many times, and in 1905, he purchased waterfront land where City Hall stands today.

In fact, the New York Times reported that during his 69^th birthday vacation, Grover Cleveland, at the time the nation’s only living ex-president, reeled in one of the largest tarpons ever caught. For those of you who enjoy the competition of fishing tournaments, Stuart is the place to be, as there are fishing tournaments happening throughout the year.
