Neptune Beach is a small, quiet, and mainly residential coastal town in Northeast Florida. It is located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. The hardpacked sand on its coast is ideal for biking and taking long walks. The town was just a train stop in the slightly larger City of Jacksonville Beach until an argument about taxes led to a revolt in 1931, when on August 11th, the residents of what is now Neptune Beach "voted 113 to 31 to secede from Jacksonville Beach and incorporate the City of Neptune Beach."
The town consists of quaint bungalows, a few local small businesses, and 1-2 story mid-century hotels -The Seahorse Oceanfront Inn and its World Famous Lemon Bar being the most popular. Here you can enjoy the moonrise over the Atlantic while eating a basket of Mayport Shrimp and drinking a Pina Colada. Pete's Bar (a local Neptune Beach institution in operation for over 89 years) hosts its annual Thanksgiving Day giving event, closing down 1st Street every year.
Neptune Beach is currently undergoing planning for a new Community Vision Plan, 2040. The comprehensive plan is a 3-Phase process that involves many community stakeholders, and citizen volunteers. We are currently in Phase 2, which will help manage growth in a way that provides the facilities and services, fostering economic growth, and preserving natural amenities. These updated policies will provide a foundation for local planning and land use decisions on capital improvements, conservation, recreation, open space, intergovernmental coordination, future land use, coastal management, housing, transportation, and public facilities.
