Vernon has a surprisingly dramatic backstory rooted in its 19th-century textile boom. Rockville grew quickly after the Rock Manufacturing Company opened the first mill, which became a success. Meanwhile, the surrounding rural town of Vernon, named after George Washington's Mount Vernon, felt left out of Rockville's growth. This prosperity sparked decades of tension over the Hockanum River and shared resources. After World War II, the mills declined, and Rockville lost much of its wealth; the two communities finally decided to join forces. They officially unified in 1965, creating Vernon.

Vernon Events 

On December 6, 2025, the annual Arctic Splash 2025 will take place at Valley Falls Park (300 Valley Falls Rd, Vernon) at 1 p.m.; it's a chilly plunge fundraiser benefiting the town's summer-camp scholarship fund. 

On March 15, 2026, the town will host a Household Hazardous Waste Collection day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Capitol Region East facility (321 Olcott St., Manchester) for Vernon residents to safely dispose of paints, automotive fluids, and other household hazardous materials. 

On June 10, 2026, the Connecticut Open House Day in Vernon gives residents access to special tours and activities at various local sites, including the New England Civil War Museum & Research Center in Rockville (14 Park Place), which opens at 11 a.m.
