Wellborn, Alabama is a small community in Calhoun County. This community is actually considered to be a hamlet. A hamlet is described as being a settlement smaller than a village or parish. Two schools are located in Wellborn, Walter Wellborn High School and Walter Wellborn Elementary. Walter Wellborn is the name of the man who donated the land for the construction of these two schools. This commuinty was larger a long time ago, but shrank in size when part of the community was annexed into Oxford. The high school held the state wrestling record for two consecutive years in the early to mid 2000's. Recently, Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail opened in the Wellborn community even though the address states it is located in Anniston. Parts of Wellborn and neighboring city Anniston are where the first electricity was set up in Alabama.
Wellborn sits at an elevation of roughly 712 feet above sea level. This may suggest the area is not prone to flooding, but flash flooding can still be a problem.
